We have just six weeks to go before the Henley Swim 2017 event. So we contacted founders Tom Kean and Jeremy Laming for more information about their unique open-water events.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO START THE HENEY SWIM?
Tom Jeremy and I both retired from rowing simultaneously. He wanted to be able to swim outdoors with someone. He had started competing in triathlons, which he won in London. We both swum at Henley several times and knew it was a fun, if slightly naughty, the adventure we could not resist. We knew at 4 am we were less likely to get yelled at and run over by jet-lagged eights.
What is OPEN WATER SWIMMING?
Tom – The freedom of space and the lack of chlorine. Swimming outdoors has a different rhythm, which I have always noticed. Swimming in the pool is “seemingly” more difficult because you cannot seem to reach that endorphin state despite all the interruptions. You can build outdoors by just settling in. You can keep building and enjoy the moment if things are going well. Jeremy – You can focus on your stroke and also try new things. You can also think more and have more options. The conditions are constantly changing.
WHAT HENLEY SWIM EVENTS ARE AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE TO ENTER
J: We try to make every event stand out by making them different. The Classic is our favorite event. It appeals to people who enjoy something different. We get a mixed reaction. Some people are excited, and others are horrified. A 2 am start is only for some. We are closest to a significant event with the Henley Mile, a swimming jamboree that includes family categories, different distances, and interesting entry permutations such as the Suits V Skins. T – The Club to Pub is another option. This was a little experiment in formatting. This is one of the events we enjoy running. The event is a Saturday night start and involves a difficult course. It ends at a pub with a disco and some disgusting food. The finisher’s medal quickly becomes a collector’s piece as it doubles as a bottle opener. You also get your very own Brakspear beer limited edition! The Thames Marathon is without doubt the most difficult of all. This is different from your average 10K run. 14K of stunning scenery with locks and weirs to navigate and a format that will bring swimmers together. This is one of the most difficult endurance tests in swimming, but it is possible with the stream.
Which HENLEY EVENT IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
T It’s still a classic. Mid-summer is my favorite time of year. I also love the long hours of daylight. This taps into my pagan tendencies. I can also satisfy my childish whims by ensuring that we have (very large) lasers to put on a bit for swimmers who arrive at night. J : I prefer the Thames Marathon marginally because it appeals to the grinding sense of endurance that I have developed over a lifetime of sport.HOW DO YOU ENTER THE HELEY SWIM?
WHO CAN ENTER THE HENEY SWIM?
T Anyone between 8 and 80 ….. In fact, I don’t know why I said 80. Anybody over 8 years old can have the fun.
WHY DO YOU FEEL SOMEONE SHOULD GET OPEN WATER SWIMMING STARTED?
T – As with many things in life you will find your life more fulfilling if you push boundaries and step outside of your comfort zone. You might find yourself hooked if you take the plunge. It’s just like other sports, it’s all about people.
WHAT EQUIPMENT/SWIMWEAR IS ESSENTIAL TO OPEN-WATER SWIMMING?
J It all depends on how tough you are. You will need a swimming costume, goggles, and a brightly colored hat. But if you are looking for something warmer, you can get a wetsuit. These suits are very popular these days. These suits are not like surfing wetsuits. They are more flexible and designed specifically for swimming. These suits will keep you warm and buoyant, which will make it easier to swim faster.
What tips would you give to someone who has never done an open water swim?
J – There’s a lot of great information online. Or you can join one of the many open water swimming clubs popping up nationwide. You could also subscribe to Outdoor Swimmer magazine if you are looking for the inside scoop. It all comes down to having a go, and mentally resetting what you believe is normal.
WHAT EVENTS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR DIFFERENT LEVELS of SWIMMERS?
The Classic – more experienced swimmers who are more confident The Mile- Anyone who wants to give it a try. The Club to Pub- Anyone over 18 who enjoys drinking, music, and naughty food. The Thames Marathon- Solid swimmers but it is surprisingly achievable with a little focus.
WHAT ELSE DO WE CAN EXPECT FROM THE HENLEY SWIM FUTURE?
T We constantly strive to improve our events and more enjoyable for all. We listen to swimmers and make suggestions for improvements that are practical and logical. Some swimmers are at their natural maximum, but there is room for improvement in the Mile and Thames Marathon. We will continue to work hard to improve our swims. Visit the Henley Swim website for more information. Reading our blog post, you can also win a free place in the Henley Mile or PS200 of Swim vouchers. (Hurry, the competition ends on 31st May!)
