All you need to know about ice swimming

In fact, there is an international organization – the IISA, International Ice Swimming Association. It was founded in 2009 to promote swimming in icy water, which is officially defined as water below 5degC. How does it do that? It organizes competitions over different distances for swimmers wearing normal swimsuits. They must not reach below the knee or be larger than the shoulder width for women. You can wear a swimming cap or glasses as well as earplugs.

Ram Barkai, a South African swimmer who established the IISA set the rules . The idea was to create an international schedule of competitions with specific safety rules. Ice Mile swimming races take place in the icy waters of Antarctica wearing the same type of swimsuits as above. This website lists all “ice swimmers” who have completed the event between 2009 and the present.

Paolo Chiarino from Genoa, Italy’s Ice Swimming Ambassador, also worth noting, completed the Ice Mile in Lake Montorfano in Italy in just over 30 minutes. The water temperature was 4.2degC, and the ambient temperature was 7degC.

According to some athletes, you must feel strong in one sense to complete an Ice Mile. Every Ice Mile is a fight against yourself. What are the effects of icy waters on your body?

An Ice Mile can cause a variety of phenomena that are related to “fight or flight.” Your central nervous system releases hormones, including adrenaline, preparing your body for fighting or running away. Subconscious mechanisms activate when we feel threatened or in danger. These are not our decisions. These mechanisms are standard and can often be triggered before we even realize they exist.

Why is ice swimming so popular? Because it is a test of your physical and mental stamina, and participants enjoy discovering something about themselves.

People who participate in such events feel a rush of endorphins. The result is lasting euphoria, calmness, and relaxation throughout the day.
